Definition
Programs that provide access to kits that allow pet owners to determine their dog's breed mix and genetic health. After the kit has been registered, the process is usually to take a swab or two of the inside of the cheek pouch of the dog a couple of hours after they have eaten. The swabs are then allowed to dry out and then sent back to the lab for analysis. Owners receive the results from one to eight weeks later. Some veterinarians prefer to submit a blood sample, where they can be assured that large amounts of DNA are present. Test kits may also be available for cats, birds and other pets.
