Definition
Individuals who engage in the practice of participating in more than one serious romantic or sexual relationship simultaneously with the knowledge and consent of all partners. People who identify as polyamorous believe in an open, non-exclusive relationship with a conscious management of jealousy and reject the view that sexual and relational exclusivity are necessary for deep, committed, long-term loving relationships. For a polyamorous relationship to be successful, everyone involved must be open and honest about what they want and need out of the union, and many believe that polyamory removes the secrecy and betrayal of trust that surrounds an undisclosed affair. People who are polyamorous can be heterosexual, lesbian, gay, or bisexual, and relationships between polyamorous people can include combinations of people of different sexual orientations.
