Definition
Individuals who have completed their military service, have met the performance and personal conduct standards of the military and are being separated from the military with no further obligation to serve with an honorable discharge. Also included are individuals who receive a general discharge under honorable conditions due to satisfactory performance but have a history of minor military duty and conduct problems, e.g., failure to meet fitness and weight standards, minor discipline problems. Service members with an honorable discharge are entitled to most veteran benefits; and some benefits including education, health, retirement and travel benefits require an honorable discharge. Those with a general discharge are eligible for some but not all benefits.
