Programs that offer workshops or other forms of training and support that help participants learn effective crisis intervention skills and techniques. Effective crisis intervention involves ethical principles which ensure that the individual's decisions and opinions are respected throughout the process and that no further harm is done. Participants learn what a crisis is and strategies to help defuse and stabilize the situation, how to help people in crisis regain a sense of control and move from an emotional state to a cognitive state where they can think and make decisions about their situation rationally. The four core principles of crisis intervention are acceptance, respect, empathy and hope. Crisis intervention skills development includes learning how use active listening techniques, assessing the person's situation, ensuring safety, providing emotional support, identifying resources that meet the client's assessed needs and follow-up to ensure that the person's needs were met.
