Programs that help nonprofit organizations, small businesses and other groups design and/or manage their physical workplace and coordinate it with the people and work of the organization. Facility management is a profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place process and technology. Facility managers work in eight broad competencies including operations and maintenance, real estate, planning and project management, human and environmental factors, leadership and management, quality assessment and innovation, finance and communication. Specific tasks may include long-range and annual facility planning; facility financial forecasting; real estate acquisition and/or disposal; architectural and engineering planning and design; new construction and/or renovation; work specifications, installation and space management; maintenance and operations management; energy management; telecommunications integration; security; and/or general administrative services.
