Definition
Programs that help nonprofit organizations, small businesses and other groups select, install and effectively use a software platform on which their other applications will run. Operating systems perform basic functions such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories, controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers, making sure that different programs and users running simultaneously do not interfere with one another and enforcing system security.
