Definition
Organizations whose members are ophthalmologists, opticians, optometrists, orthoptists and other eye care professionals who have affiliated for the purpose of promoting mutual interests, participating in professional seminars and conferences, networking with their peers, subscribing to medical journals and other publications, and taking advantage of other opportunities for continuing professional development. Many eye care professional associations set standards regarding the qualifications and performance of members, accept and investigate complaints from the public regarding the practices of members and maintain referral services through which residents who require eye care services are referred to members.
