Definition
A fatal, degenerative disease in cattle commonly known as mad cow disease that is characterized by sponge-like changes to the brain and spinal cord. The disease has a long incubation period of four to five years, but ultimately is fatal for cattle within weeks to months of its onset. It is among a number of diseases classified as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE).
