Definition
Programs that assist in filing applications for aliens wishing to be adjusted to lawful permanent residence status due to long periods of unlawful presence in the United States. Included are the legalization program commonly known as amnesty, which pertains to aliens who entered the U.S. prior to January 1, 1982 and remained unlawfully since that date; and the registry program which pertains to aliens who entered the U.S. prior to January 1, 1972 and remained unlawfully since that date. The legalization/amnesty program is no longer available. The registry program is active.
