Definition
Programs that assist in filing applications for aliens from specifically designated countries who may be granted temporary refuge in the United States because of political turmoil or natural disasters in that country. Most grants of temporary protected status are made for periods of six to 18 months and may be extended depending on the situation. Aliens qualifying under this provision are given temporary relief from removal.
