Definition
Programs that offer physical examinations and a variety of specialized tests for women who are experiencing loss of sexual desire, sexual aversion, sexual arousal disorders, orgasmic disorders, sexual pain disorders, or vaginismus (a persistent involuntary spasm of the musculature of the vagina that interferes with coitus). Diagnostic procedures look for manifestations of physical and/or psychological factors that contribute to one or a combination of these conditions. Included may hormonal imbalances; hormonal changes following childbirth or during and after menopause; chronic illnesses such as diabetes whose side effects create pain associated with intercourse or reduced lubricity; medications that cause loss of sexual desire, arousal disorders or orgasmic dysfunction; gynecologic abnormalities such as urogenital atrophy; conditions such as yeast infections that may be present; and/or smoking, drug/acohol use or other lifestyle issues that affect sexual function. The objective of the evaluation is to identify the specific nature of the dysfunction and its cause(s), and to determine the most appropriate form of treatment.
