Definition
Programs that pay for or provide equipment which is designed for use in the home that provides support for individuals who, because of respiratory failure, are partially or totally dependent upon a mechanical respiratory device to sustain life. Included are negative pressure ventilators (iron lungs, chest shells or cuirasses) and positive pressure ventilators which may be either pressure-preset or volume-preset. Included are programs that loan portable volume ventilators and those that provide equipment that people can keep.
