Definition
Programs that provide opportunities for couples facing infertility to have children without the high costs associated with assisted reproduction by "adopting" surplus embryos created by in vitro fertilization clinics for implantation by another couple, but unused for that purpose. Most surplus embryos are discarded, frozen and kept in storage for limited periods of time, or donated for research which ultimately involves their destruction.
