Definition
Programs that gradually remove patients from mechanical ventilator support by slowly increasing their breathing strength and decreasing dependence on the ventilator. The process is controlled by monitoring the individual's vital capacity and blood gas values. Weaning is initiated as soon as possible so that the patient's respiratory muscles can be restored to normal tones. Activities include breathing retraining; swallowing assessment and training; speech therapy; range of motion, reconditioning and strengthening exercises; psychological counseling and other necessary programmatic elements.
