Definition
Programs that provide treatment services for women who are experiencing loss of sexual desire, sexual aversion, sexual arousal disorders, orgasmic disorders, sexual pain disorders, or vaginismus (a persistent involuntary spasm of the musculature of the vagina that interferes with coitus). Treatment options include medical interventions for physical problems; changes in medication if a current prescription is affecting sexual function; hormone replacement therapy (HRT) using a combination of estrogen and progesterone; testosterone therapy; use of lubricants where vaginal dryness is an issue; patient education regarding sexual function; and counseling regarding ways to enhance the sexual experience.
