Definition
Programs that offer the surgical procedure that reduces myopia (nearsightedness) in which very shallow, bloodless, hairline radial incisions are made in the outer portion of the cornea where they will not interfere with vision, allowing the cornea to flatten. Also included are automated lamellar keratotomy (ALK) for people with higher levels of nearsightedness in which a precise amount of corneal tissue is removed, and photoreactive keratectomy (PRK), a procedure in which corneal tissue is removed using a thin, uniform beam of invisible ultraviolet light energy.
