Definition
A federal volunteer service program under the AmeriCorps umbrella that provides opportunities for people to volunteer their time and work on projects whose objective is to strengthen and supplement efforts to eliminate poverty and poverty-related human, social and environmental problems in the U.S. and its territories and to secure opportunities for self-sufficiency by people who are afflicted with such problems. AmeriCorps members receive a modest living allowance, student-loan forbearance, health coverage and child care for those who qualify. After successfully completing their term of service, they receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award which can be used to pay off qualified student loans or to finance college, graduate school, or vocational training at eligible institutions.
