Definition
Programs that provide opportunities for people of all ages to learn, become competitive in and enjoy lacrosse, a game in which players use a long-handled stick that has a triangular head with a mesh pouch for catching, carrying, and throwing the ball. Divisions within the sport include men's field lacrosse, women's lacrosse, indoor lacrosse, box lacrosse and intercrosse, each with variations on rules, field type, gender and equipment. The programs may provide coaching assistance to help participants play efficiently and work together as a team and are often organized into leagues, i.e., groups of teams that are formed to play one another in organized competitions. Access to a lacrosse field or rink, and necessary equipment, uniforms, if necessary, and referees for games may also be available.
