Definition
Programs that enable farmers to purchase insurance which protects them from financial loss due to the destruction of specified agricultural products as the result of rain, hail and other destructive natural forces. Also included are programs that protect grain and produce farmers who, through no fault of their own, are placed in financial risk because of the default of a wholesaler, storage facility or another part of the food production/distribution chain. Crop farmers may also be indemnified if their crops become contaminated with chemicals or toxic substances. Federal crop insurance does not cover losses that are the result of negligence or failure to observe good farming practices. Crop insurance is available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as well as from other sources.
