Definition
Programs that maintain and, where appropriate, provide certified copies of fetal death records for babies born without signs of life after 20 to 28 weeks of pregnancy, usually at the request of one or both parents. The term "stillbirth" is often used in distinction to "live birth" (the baby was born alive, even if s/he died shortly thereafter) or "miscarriage" (early pregnancy loss). Different states have different methods of documenting fetal deaths as well as differing definitions for stillbirth, some involving the number of months of pregnancy in combination with the weight of the fetus at the time of death. Other states issue certificates of birth resulting in stillbirth and fetal death, a type of birth certificate that records the birth of a stillborn child.
