Definition
Programs that help communities revitalize their historic or traditional commercial areas through a combination of historic preservation and community economic development. The Main Street approach enhances the physical appearance of the downtown area by rehabilitating historic buildings, encouraging new construction, developing sensitive design management systems and engaging in long-term planning; builds consensus among the groups that have a role in the revitalization process; markets the traditional commercial district's assets to customers, potential investors, new businesses, local citizens and visitors; and strengthens the existing economy while finding ways to expand it to meet new opportunities.
