Definition
Programs that increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to protect lives and property before or during a landslide or mudslide. Included are programs that inspect the homes and property of individual residents and give them a report which recommends ways to enhance their safety and reduce the risk of property damage or loss, as well as those that deal with ways to prevent landslides and mudslides in a more general way. Landslides are associated with instability of slopes which results in the downward and outward movement of rocks, soil, artificial fill or a combination of these materials. Mudslides (i.e., mudflows) are caused by an accumulation of water on or under the ground, often in areas that have lost ground and brush cover as may occur in the aftermath a fire.
