Definition
Programs that make permanent changes to homes, apartment buildings and other structures which enable them to withstand the shaking that occurs in an earthquake, high winds that may accompany severe weather, tidal surges associated with a hurricane or tsunami, fire or other destructive forces. Retrofitting may include bolting the frame of a home or other building to its foundation, adding steel reinforcements to unreinforced concrete walls, bracing chimneys, anchoring fuel storage tanks, utilizing fire-resistant building materials and other similar improvements that are expected to make the structure more disaster resistant.
