Definition
Boat races that feature racing shells which are propelled by oars (sculls) which pivot in fixed oarlocks. Races may be structured for single sculls (one person using two oars), double sculls (two people using two oars each), pairs (two people, each using a single oar), fours (four people each using a single oar), or eights (eight people each using a single oar); and the larger groups may use a coxswain to steer. Most events are sanctioned by the United States Rowing Association, the national governing body for the sport. Included are organizations that sponsor, organize, hold, promote, sell tickets to and publicize the events; provide information about competition schedules; and/or maintain information about current standings.
