Definition
Programs that help nonprofit boards define and understand their roles and responsibilities as the governing unit of their organization. Nonprofit boards have primary responsibility for defining and advancing the mission of their organization and are legally accountable for its operation. Activities include ensuring effective organizational planning; determining and monitoring the organization's programs and services; establishing overall financial and personnel policies; safeguarding financial assets; ensuring that financial audits are reviewed by a committee of the board; hiring, supporting, evaluating and, if necessary, removing the executive director; promoting the organization and enhancing its public image; ensuring that there are adequate human and financial resources to carry out the mission; and evaluating its own performance on a regular basis.
