Programs that help newly formed organizations prepare the paperwork that is required to apply for nonprofit, tax exempt status with the appropriate state and federal offices. Steps in the process include developing bylaws and organizational resolutions and having them legally adopted by the organization, filing articles of incorporation as a nonprofit corporation with the appropriate state office, obtaining a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by filing a Form SS-4; preparing and submitting an application for tax-exempt status (IRS Form 1023 or 1024), and responding to additional requests for information by the IRS.
