Definition
Programs that help nonprofit organizations, small businesses and other groups select and effectively use telephone equipment whose signals are communicated via satellite or via a wireless infrastructure comprising a network of antennas that passes the signal from the wireless network to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) and back again. Satellite telephone signals can be accessed anywhere in the world whereas cellular service is limited by the service provider's coverage area and may be hindered by large obstacles such as mountains or tall buildings. Wireless telephone service is generally provided on a contractual basis with a wireless provider and can be evaluated based on coverage areas, available features (e.g., two-way radio, text messaging, voicemail and caller ID) and pricing structures.
