Definition
Conditions in which the individual has an acquired hypersensitivity to a specific substance or related group of substances such as food, drugs, cosmetics, insect stings, latex and plants that normally do not cause a reaction. Allergic reactions include allergic conjunctivitis, asthma, eczema, hay fever, hives, sinusitis and anaphylaxis, a serious condition that is characterized by hives, difficulty breathing, abdominal cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, circulatory collapse and death.
