Definition
A stage in the progression of Alzheimer's disease (an average of four years in duration) which is characterized by the presence of stage one symptoms with the possible addition of aphasia; paraphrasia (disorganized speech); apraxia (the inability to perform purposive movements); agnosia (loss of comprehension of auditory, visual or other sensations); sundowner's syndrome (the ability to function during the day but the tendency to become disoriented and confused as it begins to get dark); progressive memory loss; perseverative speech and behavior; eating, sleeping and elimination disorders; pacing, paranoia, hallucinations and/or delusions; and a tendency to become angry, hostile or aggressive.
