A clinical condition in which the individual's level of intellectual functioning is within the IQ range of 35-49. Individuals with moderate intellectual disabilities can talk and learn to communicate during the preschool period but have poor awareness of social conventions. School-aged individuals with moderate intellectual disabilities are capable of learning academic skills on a kindergarten through third grade level. In adult life, they are capable of supervised, unskilled employment (e.g., in a sheltered environment), and generally need supervision in independent living.
