Definition
A type of anemia in which the blood lacks an adequate number of healthy red blood cells due to lower-than-normal amounts of folate, vitamin B-12 or vitamin C causing weakness and shortness of breath. The condition can occur if the individual does not consume enough foods with these vitamins or has an inability to absorb and process them. It can usually be corrected with vitamin supplements and dietary changes.
