Definition
A chronic disease affecting the joints, especially those bearing weight, that is characterized by degeneration of the cartilage that lines the joints and vertebrae or by the growth of bone spurs which can cause pain, stiffness and occasionally, loss of function in the affected joint. Risk factors include aging, obesity, overuse or abuse of joints as in sports or strenuous occupations, and trauma.
