Definition
A superative infection of the throat that is caused by the Group A streptococcus (GAS) bacterium, an organism that is commonly found in the nose and throat and on the skin. The condition is characterized by fever, sore throat and tender and swollen neck glands. Strep throat is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Complications of strep throat may include rheumatic fever and kidney disease.
