Definition
Programs offered by English-speaking school districts that provide classes in regular school subjects such as math, science and social studies that are taught in a specific Native American language enabling students to acquire the language as they learn the content. Native language immersion systematically incorporates Native cultural content and culturally appropriate ways of teaching and learning, and involves full-day or most-of-the-day teaching and learning in the Native language, often complemented by after-school and summer programs.
