Definition
Programs in which a radioactive substance, usually technetium, is intravenously injected to allow for the imaging of brain tissue with a scintillation camera as a means of detecting abnormalities in the structure or function of the brain. The scanning is performed once immediately following the injection and again later. Normal brain tissue picks up very little of the radioactive material; a concentration in any area is usually indicative of a disease process.
