Liver Scans

Definition
Programs that conduct x-ray scans of the liver following injection of a radioactive substance (usually gold or rose bengal dye) as a means of detecting abnormalities. Normally, the chemical is absorbed by the liver within 20 minutes and shows a uniform appearance when viewed on the scanner. Tissue that is affected by pathology does not take up the chemical so absence of radioactivity indicates disease.
