Definition
Programs that issue permits which provide written authorization for hikers, campers and others to enter wilderness areas. Permits are generally available on a day-use or overnight basis, can be picked up at trailheads and ranger stations and must be carried by the visitor while in the designated area. Permits for "quota trails" are issued in limited numbers and visitors can usually make reservations in advance.
