Programs that are staffed by specialists who are trained in the science which applies engineering principles to health care and develops devices and instruments that can be used in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of people with medical problems. Examples of biomedical engineering include the design and manufacture of cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators, artificial limbs and joints, prosthetic blood vessels, hearing aids and other similar devices; computer systems to monitor patients during surgery or intensive care; advanced imaging systems; computer-assisted diagnostic tools; and laser tools for use in surgery.
