Definition
Programs that issue bulletins to warn the public that conditions are such in a particular area that a landslide or mudslide is thought likely to occur. Landslides are associated with instability of slopes which results in the downward and outward movement of rocks, soil, artificial fill or a combination of these materials and can be triggered by events like earthquakes. Mudslides (i.e., mudflows) are caused by an accumulation of water on or under the ground, often in areas that have lost ground and brush cover as may occur in the aftermath a fire.
