Definition
Programs that conduct an evaluation of the effectiveness of nonprofit boards and/or help boards undertake a self-study that asks directors to rate the board's performance in major areas of board responsibility and reveals the strengths and weaknesses of the board as a whole. Board assessments give individual board members an opportunity to reflect on their corporate responsibilities, identify divergences of perception or opinion among board members, identify issues that require board attention, provide an opportunity for clarifying board and staff expectations, increase the level of board teamwork, serve as a springboard for board improvements and provide credibility with funders and other external audiences.
