Definition
A condition in which there is an excessive acidity of the body fluids due to an accumulation of acids or a loss of bicarbonate. Causes may include carbon dioxide retention, uncontrolled diabetes in an advanced stage, excessive ingestion of acids or acid salts, severe dehydration, diarrhea, vomiting, renal disease, impaired liver function or pulmonary insufficiency.
