Definition
The development, after an initial episode in the water, of pulmonary insufficiency. Victims typically come out of the water coughing, sputtering, eyes glassy but walking, talking and feeling fine but have aspirated a small amount of water. Twelve to 48 hours later, they start having trouble breathing, sharp pains in the chest, a raspy cough, disorientation and motor problems. Severe cases may result in death.
