Definition
Any of a variety of conditions in which there is an inflammation in the tissues of the mouth that may arise from the presence of pathogenic organisms; mechanical trauma; irritants such as alcohol, tobacco, hot foods or spices; nutritional deficiencies; blood disorders; poisoning by drugs, especially by heavy metals; or systemic infections. Included are aphthous ulcers (canker sores), thrush and trenchmouth.
