Definition
Workers, particularly governmental or institutional employees such as soldiers and civil servants, who are on mandatory temporary leave from their jobs without pay. Some furloughs are planned due to seasonal downturns in business. For example, some businesses in tourist destinations that are busy during only certain times of the year may shut down altogether during their off seasons. Not all furloughs are regularly scheduled events, however. Sometimes, economic factors or other extreme situations specific to a company or a governmental entity might force a temporary slow down of activity or a complete shut down of operations.
