Application/Referral Process
Call to make an appointment or walk in. For local VITA site (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) call 2-1-1. Keep in mind, many questions can be resolved online without waiting in line, such as: set up a payment plan, get a transcript of a tax return, make a payment, file for free, check status of refund, find out if you're eligible to apply for 'Offer in Compromise' (settle for less than the full amount of taxes one owes), answer tax questions through the ITA (Interactive Tax Assistant), etc.
Description
IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers provide personal tax help for those who believe their tax issue cannot be handled online or by phone, and want face-to-face tax assistance. All requests for tax return preparation assistance are referred to other services: File Free, Free File Fillable Forms, or to a local volunteer (VITA) site.
