Chronic Depression

A depressive disorder (also known as dysthymia or dysthymic disorder) that is characterized by a chronically depressed mood that occurs most of each day more days than not for at least two years accompanied by at least two additional depressive symptoms including poor appetite or overeating, insomnia, hypersomnia, low energy or fatigue, low self-esteem, poor concentration or difficulty making decisions, and feelings of hopelessness. Dysthymia is considered a less severe but longer lasting form of depression than major depression; and usually begins at an earlier age and results in a more persistent impairment of daily function. Many individuals with dysthymic disorder develop major depression within a period of five years.
