Definition
Individuals who apply knowledge of engineering, biology and biomechanical principles to the design, development and evaluation of biological and health systems and products such as artificial organs, prostheses, instrumentation and heath management and care delivery systems. Biomedical engineers design devices that are used in various medical procedures such as the computers that are used to analyze blood or the laser systems that are used in corrective eye surgery; develop imaging systems such as ultrasound; and create devices such as automated insulin injection systems for controlling body functions. Specialties within biomedical engineering include biomaterials, biomechanics, medical imaging, rehabilitation and orthopedic engineering.
