Definition
Radio stations that are licensed to broadcast at very high frequencies using frequency modulation, a technology by which the frequency (the number of times each second that the current changes direction) of the carrier signal is varied to incorporate sound information. Because of the format in which they are broadcast, FM signals have a limited range within which they can be received and largely depend on line of site to the transmitter, but provide a higher quality of reception which is protected from static.
