Definition
Radio stations that are licensed to broadcast at low frequencies using amplitude modulation, a technology by which the amplitude or overall strength of the signal is varied to incorporate sound information. Because of the form in which they are broadcast, AM signals can be received beyond line of sight to the transmitter, but are subject to static when there are changes in amplitude.
