Definition
The office of the individual who has been elected to provide banking, cash management, investment and accounting services for state government. The office may also oversee the state retirement system, manage unclaimed property and provide financial management support for local governments. In some states, the responsibilities of the state comptroller and the state treasurer are combined in a single office (treasurer or comptroller); and responsibilities of the state treasurer in one state may be assigned to the state comptroller in another. In Florida, the office of the state treasurer is combined with the that of the insurance commissioner.
